Our Internal Medicine service is headed by Dr. Mayer-Roenne. The service provides patient care for all aspects of internal medicine, including complex case consultation for referring family veterinarians, complete endoscopy services as well as specialized imaging procedures like abdominal and cardiac ultrasound, and access to both Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
Ultrasound examination is a non-invasive way to explore the architecture of most internal organs. It provides valuable information and allows finding diseased and abnormal organs and tissues. Further minimally invasive steps such as ultrasound guided fine needle aspirates and biopsies can lead to a specific diagnosis. A high-end ultrasound machine with a wide range of functions and transducers is available at Pet PB. Dr. Mayer-Roenne has a special interest and many years of experience in performing and interpreting ultrasound examinations. She also received specific training from board certified radiologists and cardiologists during the years of her internal medicine residency. She continues to consult and work closely with these specialists.
By using endoscopy, guided biopsies can be obtained without the need of surgery from many areas of the body such as the stomach, intestinal tract, nose, upper airways and lower urinary tract. In cases of chronic lung disease, an endoscopic evaluation and sample collection from the trachea and bronchi may be helpful in forming a diagnosis. Endoscopy can also be employed for removal of foreign bodies from the esophagus or stomach as well as stricture treatment by balloon dilation. Endoscopic placement of feeding tubes is provided for animals requiring nutritional support. The entire range of flexible and rigid endoscopes is available at Pet PB and allows Dr. Mayer-Roenne to perform endoscopies in cats and dogs of all sizes. Dr. Mayer-Roenne received intensive training in endoscopy during her residency in internal medicine and also presented a research abstract at the 2009 ACVIM forum about endoscopic treatment of esophageal strictures in cats and dogs.
Dr. Mayer-Roenne is available for consultation for the diagnosis and management of all internal medicine related areas such as seizures and other neurologic diseases, autoimmune, gastrointestinal and urologic disease, cardiac and pulmonary, liver and kidney disease, as well as diabetes and other endocrine diseases.
