Pet Emergency Symptoms

How to tell when it's a pet emergency

Most pet owners never expect their pet will need immediate treatment for a sudden illness or accidental injuries. However, the vast majority of the 170 million cats and dogs in the United States will experience at least one emergency situation during their lifetime. Since you know your pet better than anyone else, never hesitate to contact a 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic to ask about your pet's symptoms. You should seek professional advice if your animal shows continuous signs of distress, appears ill or received trauma-related injuries.

Cat & Dog Emergency Symptoms

Some emergencies can be cared for at home but the symptoms listed below may be a warning sign that your pet may be in danger. You should consider immediate medical attention if your dog or cat exhibits abnormal behavior in conjunction with any of the following symptoms:

  • Penetrating Wounds & Lacerations
  • Bloated or Enlarged Stomach Area
  • Accident Trauma or Broken Bones
  • Vomiting or Diarrhea with Blood
  • Inability to Deliver Puppies or Kittens
  • Excessive Bleeding (Anywhere)
  • Inability to Urinate or Defecate
  • Difficulty Breathing or Blue Tongue
  • Loss of Balance or an Inability to Stand
  • Ingestion of Foreign Objects or Substances

While milder symptoms are often a sign that a problem can wait for a scheduled appointment, it is better to air on the side of caution than to wait for your pet's condition to worsen. So, if you are concerned about your pet's symptoms, give your veterinarian or PetPB Emergency Clinic a call. Our staff never minds assisting you in determining whether an emergency visit is actually warranted.
