Pet Ultrasound Scans
Ultrasound scanning has been used for three decades as a diagnostic veterinary tool for evaluating pet diseases and trauma-related injuries. Using our new Philips HD11 Ultrasound System, our emergency team can acquire a higher level of diagnostic information to provide answers about your pet's medical condition. Faster diagnostic capabilities means a better chance for successful treatment of your pet's problem. Results obtained from the ultrasound scan often eliminates the need for more complicated procedures or pet surgery. PetPB is pleased to offer this important animal health care service to the Palm Beach and North Broward county areas to include West Palm Beach, Boynton Beach and Boca Raton.
Ultrasound for Internal Medicine
Ultrasound allows the veterinarian to visualize the structure of most internal organs. Internal lesions such as masses, cysts, and nodules that may not be detected on x-rays can be identified, measured, and counted via ultrasound. Many organs that are difficult to view on plain film radiographs, such as the pancreas and the adrenal glands, can be examined with ultrasound. Ultrasound examination of the heart (an echocardiogram) allows the veterinarian to view the heart in motion. Abnormalities such as wall thickening, chamber dilation and certain irregular motions can be visualized.
A Typical Pet Ultrasound Exam
The typical ultrasound exam requires only light sedation. Ideally patients are fasted for at least 8-12 hours prior to the exam. Because the ultrasound beam cannot penetrate through hair or fur, the pet's fur is shaved over the areas to be scanned. Just prior to starting the exam, a non-toxic, water-soluble coupling gel is applied to the skin over the area. Images are viewed on a monitor, and video and/or still images are recorded and stored electronically for review and/or comparative studies. Our staff will provide your regular veterinarian with a CD copy of the images the doctor captured during the study. Ultrasound can often aid in diagnosing problems earlier than would otherwise be possible and an early diagnosis offers a better chance of a successful treatment.
